Presetting basal ganglia for volitional actions.

The basal ganglia (BG) have been considered as a key structure for volitional action preparation. Neurons in the striatum, the main BG input stage, increase activity gradually before volitional action initiation. However, because of the diversity of striatal motor commands, such as automatic (sensory driven) and volitional (internally driven) actions, it is still unclear whether an appropriate ...

Neural correlates of conflict resolution between automatic and volitional actions by basal ganglia.

A dominant basal ganglia (BG) model consists of two functionally opposite pathways: one facilitates motor output and the other suppresses it. Although this idea was originally proposed to account for motor deficits, it has been extended recently also to explain cognitive deficits. Here, we employed the antisaccade paradigm (look away from a stimulus) to address the role of the caudate nucleus, ...

Actions, Policies, Values, and the Basal Ganglia

The basal ganglia are widely believed to be involved in the learned selection of actions. Building on this idea, reinforcement learning (RL) theories of optimal control have had some success in explaining the responses of their key dopaminergic afferents. While these model-free RL theories offer a compelling account of a range of neurophysiological and behavioural data, they offer only an incom...

The Role of the Basal Ganglia in Discovering Novel Actions

Our interest is in the neural circuitry which supports the discovery and encoding of novel actions. We discuss the significant existing literature which identifies the basal ganglia, a complex of subcortical nuclei, as important in both the selection of actions and in reinforcement learning. We discuss the complementarity of these problems of action selection and action learning. Two basic mech...

Simulations of pharmacological actions in the basal ganglia circuit

We have carried out computational simulations to investigate pharmacological effects in the basal ganglia (BG). Results of our simulations showed that dopamine depletion induces a time delay of the saccade eye movements and an oscillatory behavior of the neuronal activity in the BG. We also suggest that the oscillatory behavior is originated from formation of closed loop circuits in the BG.
